Midjourney is a gem, I was captivated from the moment of my first prompt. It creates beautiful quality, aesthetically stunning images. Playing with it, without intention, I began to see stories emerge. A particular story formed in my mind and I began to test it's abilities. I wanted to see if I could shape a specific vision by playing with prompting while using Midjourney's features to their fullest potential.
In Midjourney, simple prompts using natural language create beautiful works of art. To tell a story you need more than once off images. You have to play with words, camera angles, mood, lighting, style and character.
My background is in photography, which means 'painting with light'. With Midjourney you are essentially painting with 'words'. The word 'whimsical' creates a light-hearted playfulness, the word 'flowing' adds movement, 'menacing' results in dark moody colours and expressions. Getting the results you want to tell your story becomes a joint creative venture with you and AI working together. You are constantly tweaking your results with your words, changing parts, moving elements, playing essentially. It can be frustrating at times because you want AI to give you what you envision and sometimes, it just wont. Other times, trying a little bit everything, you are able to achieve the outcome you want, and it's incredibly rewarding.
Midjourney offers a fantastic range of features meaning you can get really creative. You can change the position of your character, add items, remove items, change clothing or location. The inpainting feature, means you can zoom out and place your character in any given scene. You can place them in a kitchen or a forest and you can change the lighting, mood and atmosphere in the scene. You can place a book in their hands, or a steaming pot of soup. Essentially you can refine your creations with precision, adjusting colors, textures, and composition to achieve your desired result. Additionally, Midjourney offers a variety of filters and effects that add layers of depth and complexity to the generated images.
One of the most difficult parts of storytelling in Midjourney is character consistency. When this holy grail has been cracked by Midjourney, the storytelling will really begin. Until then then are a number of really good tricks that can help you. There are too many to write here, but Ill put it in my next blog.
Once you've finished creating your images in Midjourney, you can use them as they are or pop them into one of the AI video generation tools. I haven't got to this stage yet, so I'll have a lot to learn but I actually can't wait. It's going to be really exciting to see them come alive. Then there's the possibility of generating some music or adding narration. This is what I love about AI, It opens up a world of possibilities.
For anyone creative, or anyone who loves to tell a story, Midjourney is one of the most exciting and versatile AI image generation tools out there. It's range of features for creative control are second to none. If i had to give it a five star rating I'd give it ten. It's that good!
